Pumping at work is a personal choice. It’s quite a challenge for many mothers and requires a lot of time and organization. As an employer, you can positively contribute to this by providing a good, luxurious pumping room. Working mothers have the right to spend a quarter of their working time breastfeeding or pumping during the first nine months after giving birth. An employer is obligated to provide a suitable space. This can’t just be any random space like a warehouse or toilet. A pumping room must meet legal requirements. An unsuitable space can have a negative impact on milk production. Poor milk production causes the mother more stress, which can negatively affect her work performance. A good pumping room offers benefits to both the mother and the employer!
A good pumping room meets the requirements
A pumping room must be fully equipped to meet the right requirements. The legal requirements are:
- The room offers sufficient privacy to the employee.
- The room is hygienic.
- The employee must be able to lock the room from the inside.
- The room is quiet and secluded.
- There’s a comfortable chair, bed, or resting couch in the pumping room.
- The air quality in the room must be adequate.
- The room is free from hazardous substances, including cleaning products.
- Electricity, as mothers usually need power to connect the breast pump.
- Not mandatory, but convenient is running water in the pumping room for rinsing the pump and storage bottle.
- Ideally, there’s also a refrigerator for storing breast milk in the pumping room, or else a refrigerator must be available in another room.
